The all-new Camaro we've been waiting on for two years is just a few days from showing its production face, and we've already got some bad news. The General has dumped plans for the Z28. The highly anticipated Camaro variant was rumored to feature the same supercharged 6.2L engine that powers the brawny Cadillac CTS-V with well over 500 ponies. Without the Z28 in the picture, the still powerful SS edition will be the range-topper for now, and we're expecting power to be just under that of the base Corvette's 436 hp.

While this is certainly bad news for Camaro enthusiasts, it does make sense in the face of $4.25 per gallon gas to cancel a supercharged monster that's likely to be eligible for a hefty gas guzzler tax. What doesn't make sense is canceling the Z28 moniker when it means much more to Camaro fans than SS ever will. There goes the aftermarket for louvers and mullet wigs. Thanks for the tip.

:WTF:

According to Scott Settlemire, the Z28 is NOT dead, and I think I'd beleive Scott over a autoblog article.....:)

The next couple of weeks should answer most of the questions.

Agreed, there might be some hope yet, but with the news out of GM this morning I wouldn't be so quick to assume it will live through the cuts even if its still alive today.

What I'd really like to see is each of us automotive (GM) enthusiasts buy 100 shares of GM in order to help it recover. At $10 each its a real bargain honestly.

What Scott told be personally was that there would be 4 (at this time) diffrent camaros and that the first year would probably only introduce 2 of them (a V6 and a V8) I think the Z28 will be a year or 2 away.

I think GM should merge with Chrysler. Give the guys at GM a crack at the Prowler, put a v8 in that and call it a day!

I highly doubt there are any plans that it will just not come out but I don't put it past them to modify somethings on it

P.S. Who ever is running the name sake division would be a moron to kill the Z28 and let the SS roll

I know you are being a S.A. but if the camaro does well in sales there may be a firebird in the near future but the Trans Am will not be coming back due to name licensing. This is from GM it's selfBLOWN!!!!
