While driving my car at slower speeds, and turning there is a ticking noise coming from the front end. It sounds like it could be the rack but not really to sure! What are some symtoms of a bad rack and can you tell if its bad by and inspetion? it doesnt really effect the driving of the car but its kinda annoying and i dont want to be driving down the road one day and loose my steering!? Any thoughts

Do you have any play in your steering?

Can you make the noise while sitting still?

If there's no play I'd say it's probably the bushing going. I know it's not a Ford but I have the exact same problem.

Could also be a bad inner tie rod

I just got a rebuilt rack from Advance Auto, about $180.00 and it includes the tie rods, pretty easy to install too...

sounds like a ball joint if it's at slow speeds, or a tie rod. gotta lift the wheels and check for play.

there isnt really any play in the steering or anything and the reason i cant hear it at high speeds is because the exhaust i have is too loud to here it and im not able to turn the wheels far enough! Im putting it on the lift tomorrow so i will check the ball joints, tie rod and rack for play an wear! also anyone have a bolt layin around that goes from the tranny (T56) to bell housing?

you need to use a 4 point, a rack won't work to check steering.

yeah but i didnt notice anything loose so i think it might be the tie rod it shows some wear in the bushings but not much, also i was thinking it could be the steering column! but who knows its still there on the lift so i will rip some stuff apart tomorrow morning!
