This is long winded but well worth the warning!

One of my friend’s car broke down on April 30th and having the worst credit imaginable decided to go and see where she could get a car. She submitted an application to Drive Time, but didn’t get a response quickly enough for her and she decided that she had driven past Family Motors plenty of times and figured that she would give them a try (mistake number one). They ended up approving her for right around $8,000 dollars and told her that they had three cars that were in her price range that they could put her in, two Toyota corollas and a Ford Focus. Of course, the interior on both of the two Toyotas was trashed and the Focus came out looking like the diamond even though it was missing the stereo and had wires hanging out of the dash. So she decides that she’s going to go with the Focus (mistake number two). So, the next day around lunch time Keith from Family Motors calls her and asks her if the car is doing ok and if it’s over heating. Being that she doesn’t know much about cars she tells him that the car is doing fine and doesn’t really think about the over heating comment.
Later that day she is driving down the interstate and the car starts over heating, losing power, and all of the lights on the dash start flickering. So she calls the dealership and tells them that they need to fix this car that she hasn’t had it even a day and that it’s already broken down on her. The whole time she is talking with Keith the guy that sold her the car, he tells her to bring the car and that he will have it taken to RK (which apparently is the sister dealership) and have them take a look. So, Monday comes and they guy isn’t returning her calls or letting her know what is going on with the car. So, my friends sister calls and asks to speak to the manager, she starts telling him what is going on and that they need to tell them what is going on and tell them when her sister is going to get the car back. He tells her that this is the first time that he’s heard about this and that he will make sure that the car gets fixed and to only deal with him from now on.
Tuesday comes, and they tell her that the car is fixed and that she needs to go to RK Chevy to pick the car up. At this point I decide that I’m going to check this out and take Joe (novajoe) with me to run a diagnostics on this car to see if they even did anything to fix the car. We get to RK and no one knows where they keys are and so after an hour of waiting around for Melvin the manager of Family Motors to call we finally get told to go back to Family Motors and they’ll let her have a loaner even though supposedly they don’t do that and they are really going out of their way for her. So, we all drive back to Family Motors and wait another hour for the Jack asses to get off their duff and put a license plate on a car. The first car had no gas, the second car had the check engine soon light on and all the other safety lights going haywire on it, then they finally put her in a Jetta that wasn’t much better but it at least was able to make off their lot.

Now it’s Wednesday and she gets a call that she can come and pick up the car. She goes during her lunch brake and gets to Family Motor only to find out that the car is still at RK. Now he manager Melvin gets the asshole Keith that sold her the POS Focus to drive her and fellow co worker to RK to pick up the car. She gets back to office at 1:30 and gets Joe to run a diagnostics on the car to see if they had even done anything on the car since they wouldn’t give her a spread sheet to show her what had been done even though they assured her that car had been fixed. Joe hooks the car up to run a diagnostics and the car start over heating in the service bay, it throws a transmission position sensor error, a passive restraint system disabled, and the fans don’t even turn on unless you turn the AC on. Also the computer is saying that the car is running at over 300 degrees and the dash sensor is not even showing that the car is over heating. So basically these assholes did nothing to fix the car besides wipe the codes on the car so it would run long enough to get her off their lot.

By this time she is in tears and so upset that they have been giving her the run around for almost a week. So, Joe and I pack up the lap top and take the diagnostics cable to run a diagnostics right at Family Motors so we can get her money back. We get to Family Motors and she parks the POS Focus in the middle of their parking lot and goes into the office with Joe. Keith see’s her coming and tells her to giving her the F-ing keys. He moves the car and goes back into the office threw a back door. In the mean time she and Joe are in the office talking to the manager about getting her money back. He tells her that he’ll give her the money back but he can’t cut her a check until after five and that it’s really against their policy to do this since all of their sales are final. She agrees and comes outside. We start to get ready to leave and Melvin the manager comes out and tells her if he can put her into a better car can they save the sale? She asks him what he has and brings a ’02 Chevy Malibu that the headliner is missing and all the trim pieces are just hanging down in his face. This thing looks like a bigger piece of **** than the Focus. Joe hooks up the car to his diagnostics software and this POS is throwing an EGR failure code. So, this is a no go again. We try to leave for the third time and he says well what if I can get you into another car? By this time I’ve had enough and tell him no we’re not doing this any more we are going to go somewhere else.
So we come back at five after we’ve gone to Drive time and gotten her a ’05 Dodge Status that is in excellent condition (considering I hate anything Dodge), and pick up the check, but the rest of the money has to be put back on her card. So they run the card and give put the money back. Well as of today the rest of the money is still not back in her account and there is no pending refund showing anywhere as far as her bank is concerned.
If anyone is thinking about going to this scam artist dealership don’t. All that they are selling on the lot are retard cars that RK couldn’t pawn off on people in their used care lot. Needless to say I won’t be doing a business with RK in the future or ever!

This is pretty typical of those places. Most of those cars are from the auctions and though they might look ok, most have VERY serious problems. Personally I'd say buying a car from a private owner is safer than most of those guys. My roomate told me he was getting a deal on a Lexus from a guy he knows, but when he showed up with it the tags were from Charlie Fuks. It was only a few years old but had over 100,000 miles already and after only a week the check engine light was on.

It really sucks. But it happens all the time. Especially with women. Dealerships normally treat women like small kids, talking down to them and never caring to do the right thing. I have seen it first hand many time and it makes my blood boil.

Well I don't consider myself car ignorant, and I had a big car dealership in Elizabeth City try to sell me a BMV that was in such bad shape that the on board diagnostics system was trying to dial up the BMV service center. I had to tell them three times that I didn't want that piece of crap.

Family Motors is part of the RK motor group. And they rip off any one they can. Their favorite trick is to sell you the car and call you back later and tell you that they need you to sign some loan paper work and try to get more money out of you.

a BMV? that must've been a knock off of BMVV, you expected it to be decent? And RK owns Family motors, and they are the worst scam artists.

Saw them first hand tell a girl she was preapproved for a car, car was crap, then almost a week later told her the financing fell through and she needed to figure out how to pay for the car since the contract stated "amount to be paid in full regardless of how within 7days".

told that girl not to do it, but women never want to listen... finally she listened to me, drove the car to them and left it on their lot, never heard from them again...
